How AMF Guitar Cabinets Are Built

A Habitat for your Guitars

A guitar display cabinet works best when it creates a stable habitat: steady humidity, safe materials, and protection from light. An AMF cabinet does this with natural wood, precise joinery, and active humidity control, specifically designed around guitars...

Each cabinets starts with hand-selected, locally-sourced & sustainable American Hardwoods

Our wood is sanded to a high quality, then finished with pre-catalyzed lacquer to enhance its natural beauty. On the right, you'll find samples of our wood selections, including the material that comes in to contact with instruments, natural cork.

How The Habitat Works:

  • The wood works with the room: Our cabinets are designed and built to absorb and release ambient humidity (existing in the room where the cabinet lives) with no effects to the cabinet itself.

  • Humidity fluctuations get smoothed out: As the cabinet's wood emits and absorbs moisture (this happens very slowly), it softens any sudden changes inside the cabinet.

  • The structure stays sound: The cabinet is expertly handcrafted to manage those natural fluctuations without risking its own structural integrity.

  • Active humidity control does the fine-tuning: A fine-tuned controller humidifies the inside of the cabinet as needed.

Guitar analogy: a luthier-made acoustic is precisely handcrafted and braced with hardwoods to withstand the normal fluctuations and environments of the seasons all while utilizing the highest quality hardwoods. Our Habitats, built from the same quality hardwoods, work the same way. They move with their environment instead of fighting it.

Why We Don't Use Seals:

AMF cabinets are not sealed with synthetic gaskets. That is a deliberate design choice, not a shortcut.

Many cabinets rely on synthetic materials to seal their guitar humidors such as rubber, foam, or neoprene. Over time, these materials can release chemical vapors into the enclosed space. This is called off-gassing, and it's effects can be detrimental to a guitar's finish, resulting in irreversible damage, and costs you the value of your instrument.

At AMF, we don't use seals on our cabinets.

Instead we utilize a traditional wood-to-wood seal construction:

  • Tight, exact joinery lets the doors close firmly against the cabinet itself.

  • Locking doors: They simultaneously add security to your cabinet while sealing the cabinet naturally.

  • A slide bolt and lock. They hold the doors snug, so the humidity stays where it belongs.

The result: a stable environment with no synthetic seal material off-gassing near your guitar.

Glass

Light and UV: what glass can and can't do

Sunlight carries more than the light you can see. Glass can filter part of it, but no glass stops all of it. Here is how UV works, what Low-E glass really does, and why placement of your cabinet still matters.

What is UV?

Sunlight has three main parts: visible light, infrared (heat), and ultraviolet (UV).

UV is invisible and high-energy. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI), a Government of Canada conservation institute, notes that UV can yellow varnishes and weaken organic materials depending on the amount of exposure. Additionally, daylight is noted as the strongest source of UV.

A guitar's finish is a coating, so light can of course effect it. Visible light fades things too. CCI says it is incorrect to assume that avoiding UV stops fading.

AMF:

Our cabinets come standard with UV-protected glass. We also offer glass upgrades such as Low-E, via our custom shop.

We take great pride in sourcing the best materials available. We work closely with our suppliers to identify the highest quality, ethically harvested, and sustainable materials around.

Low-E Glass

What is Low-E glass and how it works:

• Low-E means low "emissivity". It is a coating consisting of an invisible, ultra-thin metallic layer that's thinner than a human hair.

• Low-E controls heat without dimming the view. This invisible coating then reflects radiant heat (filtering it out) while letting visible light through. It also reduces the possibility of UV damage.

The Process:

• Sunlight hits the glass. It arrives as short-wave energy.

• Visible light passes through. Daylight and views stay clear.

• The coating reflects long-wave infrared. This is radiant heat.

• Less heat crosses the glass. Radiant heat transfer drops.

What Low-E Glass Can't Do:

  • It is built for heat, not for your guitar's finish. Low-E coatings reflect infrared heat. The research chapter we cite makes no UV or fading claim, and CCI says avoiding UV does not stop fading.

  • More heat blocking can mean a dimmer view. Coatings that keep out more solar heat usually let in less visible light, so the clearest glass is not the most heat-blocking.

  • UV filters vary and wear out. CCI found only 35% of their 17 tested filters met the strict museum spec. Real products can fall short of their claims, and filters last about 10 to 15 years indoors.

  • AMF's cabinet materials have been tested & approved by C.F. Martin & Co. for preservation spec. Our cabinets come standard with UV-protected glass. We also offer Low-E glass an an additional upgrade on all cabinets. For a quote on Low-E glass for your guitar display case, please contact our custom shop HERE.

What this means for a guitar display cabinet:

1. Keep it out of direct sun. C.F. Martin says to keep guitars away from heat sources, air vents, and direct sunlight. This aids in reducing the ability for light to effect your guitar's finish.

2. Treat glass as one layer of preservation, not the whole plan.

3. Keep conditions steady. Martin recommends 45 to 55 percent relative humidity and 72 to 77°F. Their instrument care guide notes rapid changes are what to guard against. We advise the same parameters, which we refer to as the, "guitar humidity safe zone."

Quick Recap:

  • Natural wood absorbs and releases humidity with the room.
  • Wood-to-wood joinery and locking doors replace synthetic seals.
  • UV glass helps, but it is not a shield. Keep cabinets out of direct sun.
  • Built by artisans and artists, for guitars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the cabinet and electronics made for guitars specifically?

Yes. Both were designed for guitars from the start, not adapted from general-purpose  display cases, or by utilizing an off-the-shelf-humidification system to then preserve instruments.

What is the ideal humidity for a guitar?

C.F. Martin recommends 45 to 55 percent relative humidity and a temperature of 72 to 77°F. See our Ultimate Guide to Guitar Humidity for an in-depth explanation.

Is the cabinet safe for valuable or vintage guitars?

Yes. AMF cabinets are built to protect some of the most important and historic guitars. All materials and finishes are tested and approved by C.F. Martin.

Is UV-protected glass enough to protect my guitar?

No glass blocks all UV. Low-E and similar options filter a large share, but direct sunlight can still damage a finish. Keep the cabinet out of direct sun.

Does the room humidity matter?

Yes. Cabinets perform best in a room with reasonably steady ambient humidity conditions, away from direct sun, heaters, and air vents.

How does the cabinet keep humidity steady?

Two ways. The natural wood buffers humidity swings by absorbing and releasing moisture with the room. Our active humidity controller then humidifies (or dehumidifies) as needed.

If the wood absorbs and releases humidity, can the cabinet warp or crack?

The cabinet is expertly handcrafted to manage those fluctuations. The wood is designed to take in and release ambient humidity without risking the cabinet's structural integrity.

Are AMF cabinets sealed?

Not with synthetic seals. We use precise wood-to-wood construction, locking doors, and a slide bolt and lock to hold the fit and keep humidity stable.

Why don't you use rubber or foam seals?

Some seal materials, neoprene among them, can off-gas inside an enclosed space. We have tested multiple seals on the market and chose a design that does not need one.
